The Ministry of Environment has drafted a law that will hand out fines and prison terms for companies who fail to complete and submit Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) on the development projects they undertake.
According to a copy of the EIA draft law, fines of 100 million riel, or about $25,000, and prison terms of three years will be doled out to individuals and firms that fail to submit an EIA on any development project.
“If determined by the ministry that a scheduled development has the potential to have a significant impact on natural resources, ecosystems, biodiversity or human health and public welfare a full environmental impact assessment will be undertaken by the project owner and submitted to the Ministry, ” according to the draft law.
